The name Pythagoras evokes a theorem. The historical person behind it, however, is far harder to reconstruct.

The problem with famous names

Pythagoras probably lived in the sixth and early fifth centuries BCE and became associated with a distinctive community and way of life. He left no surviving writing of his own. The available testimonies come through other authors, sometimes centuries later, creating a gap between the historical teacher and his growing legend.

The theorem and attribution

The right-triangle relationship known as the Pythagorean theorem is genuinely important mathematics. Variations of this relationship were understood in earlier cultures. Assigning the theorem’s first discovery or its earliest proof to Pythagoras personally goes beyond what the surviving evidence securely demonstrates.

Ancient classical temple architecture
Ancient architecture evokes the wider Greek world; it does not identify a Pythagorean meeting place.

Souls, ritual and discipline

Early testimony associates Pythagoras with beliefs about the transmigration of souls, religious observances and a regulated communal life. His reputation as a wonder-worker also produced remarkable stories. These stories are evidence about a tradition’s beliefs and reputation, not documentation that miraculous acts took place.

The later Pythagoreans

Subsequent Pythagorean thinkers engaged mathematics, harmony and cosmology, making the tradition influential even where the individual founder’s views remain uncertain. This distinction matters: an idea associated with a school is not automatically an idea its founder personally taught.

An experiment in intellectual honesty

When a legendary individual is tied to a discovery, ask three questions: When is the earliest surviving account? Was the discovery known elsewhere? Does the evidence identify the individual or only a community?
