Every scientific investigation occurs within experience, yet explaining subjective experience remains one of the deepest questions about mind.
Several meanings of a familiar word
Consciousness can mean being awake, having access to information, being aware of oneself, or having subjective experience: the felt quality of seeing red, hearing music or feeling discomfort. These are related but not identical. Research becomes confused when an experiment about attention is taken to settle every philosophical question about experience.
What neuroscience can measure
Researchers study correlations between experience and brain activity, the effects of anesthesia, sleep and injuries, and how attention changes perception. These methods can reveal mechanisms and constraints. They do not, by themselves, supply universal agreement about what consciousness fundamentally is.

The explanatory gap
The ‘hard problem’ asks why and how certain physical processes are accompanied by something it is like to undergo them. Some philosophers regard the puzzle as fundamental, others think it can be dissolved through better understanding of cognition, language or information processing. There is no single consensus theory that settles all of these issues.
Beyond the brain?
Proposals about non-biological or non-local consciousness should be defined precisely. Evidence for correlations between brain states and reported experience is extensive, but whether consciousness could exist in another substrate is a distinct question from whether any particular paranormal claim has been demonstrated. An open question is not positive evidence for a preferred answer.
ThinkLab prompt
What observation would allow us to distinguish two rival theories of consciousness? If both explain the same reports, can a future experiment make different predictions?
